As the tip crosses each bar and space in the printed code, the photo-diode measures the intensity of the light that is reflected back from the light source. The photo-diode creates a waveform that measures the width of the bars and spaces in the barcode. The dark bars absorb the light, and the white spaces reflect it. So, the voltage waveform generated by the photo-diode is a representation of the bar and space design of the barcode.
